| When I was six months old my parents moved our family from Kansas City, MO to Naples, CA near Long Beach. It is a series of small islands with canals that empty into a tidal marshland. At low tide we would explore the sand and mud bottom chasing after crabs and building sandcastles. As I got older, my awareness expanded from the canals to the bay, and when I was six years old, my uncle, the Skipper, finally allowed me to cross the bar with him into the ocean on his 16' sailboat. I've been sailing ever since. At the same time, my enthusiasm for sailboats was equaled only by my love of the noise produced by our piano. I started formal music studies.
Today, I cruise my Peterson 44 Cutter, often single-handed, to and from Catalina. But when another sailboat comes over the horizon, there's always a race and the sails get tweaked and the need for ideal trim and harmony with the elements is all that exists.
Carroll Ballard is also a sailor whose relationship with the wind is far-reaching and mystical. Through his artistry he manifested his experiences on the water into images of poetic dimension that allowed me to unite two of the major forces of my life, sailing and music. The two practices are not dissimilar. The lessons of being aware without becoming self-conscious and trusting one's instincts tempered with experience can be practiced every time out in both endeavors.
The score for Wind certainly draws from my experiences and feelings for the sport, the sea, the characters and their situations. Because the film goes from very simple intimacy to grand ocean racing and high emotions, I utilized everything from solo piano to full orchestra with a lot of smaller synthesizer pieces that I performed myself in attempt to give these particular pieces a more uniquely personal representation of my version of the film's reality. I hope it conjures in the listener images of wind, sea and quest. |
