Zoë Poledouris was born on August 25,1973 in Los Angeles. She is the eldest daughter of composer, Basil Poledouris (The Hunt for Red October, Robocop, Free Willy, Lonesome Dove, For Love of the Game). Zoë grew up interpreting her father's music with movement on ice as a competitive figure skater. At the age of nine she performed a piece for her father on recorder which became the melody for "The Orgy" in the feature film Conan the Barbarian. She received co-writing credit and became one of the youngest members of BMI.
After fifteen years of ice skating, Zoë traded her blades for paintbrushes and received her B.A. from Bennington College in 1995 with majors in Art and Costume Design. As a Freshman, Zoë was the lead singer for an all-girl punk band called Table-Grade. They played the LA club scene during summer break and had their demos played on local radio station KROQ. Zoë continued to refine her musical talent over the next few years, both as writer and lead singer with her various bands; Evelyn Oz, Doppler and Bombshell.
Following graduation Zoë presented her demos to friend and film composer, Christopher Tyng, who helped further produce her songs. One of them, "Into It", was chosen by director, Paul Verhoeven, to be performed in his film, Starship Troopers. Similarly, director, Randal Kleiser, used her song, "Born with It" in his film Shadow of Doubt. Zoë can be seen on-camera in both features performing her songs.
In late 1999, Zoë entered the realm of film music composing. While playing
in her band, Bombshell, she co-wrote the rock driven score to John Waters' latest
project, Cecil B. DeMented. The film combines Zoë's hard, driving
rock and strong melodic sensibility.
April 2003 will see the national release of Down and Out wth the Dolls,
a film in which Zoë acts in the lead role while also being the film's composer;
writing, singing and performing everything. This movie is the first of several
films to be released showcasing Zoë's talent as an actress, film composer
and songwriter. In the summer of 2001, Zoë was featured in FilmMaker Magazine
as one of the "25 New Faces of Independent Film."
Currently,
Zoë is recording and performing in Los Angeles with her new band LOONER
and is eager to meet and work with filmmakers who, like herself, want to experiment
by pushing the limits of their mediums. Her style is emotional and tactile and
she utilizes the full spectrum of musical technology, from recording live instruments
to editing on Protools and mixing in 5.1 Surround.
